THE ART OF STEPHEN QUICK

THE BANANA MANIFESTO

The "Banana Manifesto" is basically an art gag; a post modern take on post modern ideals. I take overused cultural images, mainly what I call "Athena Art", and given these images a new lease of life. The images chosen are ones that are so overused that we no longer look at them, we know what they are, very much in the same way we do not need to read a coke can or a McDonalds sign to know what it is. By adding a Warhol banana, these images takes on new meanings and make the viewer re-evaluate the subjects in question.

The Bananas in some cases work as a social commentary (guns replaced by bananas) or make a comment on the person or character in the painting (the banana acting as an innuendo for Audrey Hepburn), they can also act to reveal new contextual meanings, all hoping to bring a giggle or a smile from the viewer.
