"The screen is such a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle." - Stanley Kubrick

SPEED PAINTING FILMS

‘Speed Painting’ is a silly name really as I’m not actually painting fast in real time, speed painting is what the aesthetic has been coined by the interweb, describing the painting footage being sped up as opposed to time lapsed.

The purpose of these videos, as well as entertainment, is to show the process a painting goes through from start to finish and the development I go through, imagine if you could have seen Picasso painting Guernica, Wahol printing Marylin or Hurst cutting that cow in half…umm maybe not the latter. The videos become as much a part of the art as the painting itself, it’s just as important and valued as the final painting, along with providing an archive and documentation of my art and me.
To add another dimension, as well as keep myself sane, I often act out a character or clown around at the start and end of the videos, this normally has context with the subject being painted, to me acts as a ‘don’t take me too seriously’ something I despise in the art world, so take me with a pinch of salt…take the painting serious not me.

ART HOUSE FILMS

Film, for me, is less about thinking and more about feeling, this is why film is the medium I am most passionate about. Film has one major advantage over other mediums; you can construct a strong narrative that can be immediate and clear to the audience, whether it is a story or a concept. I have always viewed my films as "writers films". Concepts and structure come from words, even if they don't exist in the final cut; everything starts off as a story.

The concepts explored in my films stem from personal memories of childhood. These feed into an exploration of mental health, from self esteem (Stevie, 2004) to schizophrenia (Shoelaces, 2004). The nature of these concepts allows the audience to relate to the film, through connections with their own personal memories, which at times can be quite uncomfortable as the stories force the audience to remember things they would rather forget. This is of value as the audience are not passive to the concepts in the film, but are active in creating the meanings and values of the work.

PLAYING FILMS

Due to bandwith usage size and compatibility problems, all films are now streamed from YouTube so they are now user friendly and anyone can watch.

All of the videos are streamed from YouTube are streamed through a Flash player, so you need to have the latest version of Macromedia Flash installed on your computer. To download it, please visit Adobe.

If a video doesn't play continuously, it may be due to your connection speed. You'll need a broadband connection with at least 500+Kbps for the best viewing experience.

To make sure that you hear sound while watching videos, please check the volume controls on your computer. Also, be sure to increase the volume on other conventional video players on your computer, such as Real Player or Windows Media. This may have an effect on your computer's master volume levels. Next, check to see if your system meets these requirements for running the video player:
*
Macromedia Flash Player 7.0+ plug-in
* Windows 2000 or higher with latest updates installed
* Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
* Firefox 1.1+, Internet Explorer 5.0+, or Safari 1.0+

*Broadband connection with 500+ Kbps
