Interview with the artist

What is the first artwork you ever sold?
The first that was ever sold was to my school, well I remember never getting it back!! It was a pencil drawing that I had done of my dog Tegan out hunting. I used to skip french and hide in the corner of the art room and add layer after layer to this dog. This was my final piece for my GCSE's which got me an A*, I think if I did that now for my GCSE's I would get chucked out. I have found with my little sister, that as art has evolved so has the way it's being taught, they are no longer just being taught how to draw like I was, but also how to think in a contemporary cultural manner, my stupid dog picture had none of that.

Did a particular person or event spark your interest in art?
Well of course as with anyone from my generation it has to be Rolf Harris, in fact we had him as the main focal point of our degree poster.

When and where did you first exhibit your work?
I think the first exhibition I remember was at a church hall in Honiton, and I displayed a piece called"Shesus" it was a 6 foot by 4 foot cross with a woman in the crucifix position, it was hung directly in front of the door so as you entered this church hall, instead of seeing Jesus staring down at you, you had a brightly coloured, beautiful woman, which was a nice change.

Do you find art relaxing?

NO NO NO NO NO, if you find it relaxing you are not working hard enough, and are content to paint fields and pretty little birds !!!!

What is in your artistic toolbox?
Cigarettes and alcohol.

What do you find most difficult?
Getting up in the morning, but that has nothing to do with art so ummmmmmm painting hands, they normally suck.

What is the best thing somebody could say about your art?
Here, have £10,000 for that piece, and I'll throw in my super model girlfriend.

What is the worst thing somebody could say about your art?

Q - "Why don't you paint a nice landscape?"
A - "Look out the f#~@ing window if you wanna see a landscape!!!"

Have any of your artworks ended up in unusual or famous places?
Bins!!! No, I did some sculptures called chair people, and they were way too big to fit anywhere, there was 7 of them so I went to a field and planted them all in the ground.

If your artwork could be displayed anywhere in the world where would you choose?

In a film, if that makes sense, like the white women sculptures in Clockwork Orange that give out the milk, that would be cool.

What is your favourite media and why?

Acrylic, really because it is fast, cost effective and gives a damn good look, for some reason I have never had the urge to use oils, for my type of work oils seem to be some what out of date, acrylic just suits the painting better.
For abstract stuff I love to use as many different mediums as possible, chucking powder paint into wet acrylic gives one hell of an effect.

Do you have a favourite amongst your own artwork?
Nope not really I try not to get attached to my paintings but there has been a few that I have been sad to see go. I have found in the past when I have fallen in love with a painting a few years down the line I can't stand the sight of it.

Which famous subject would you like to use in your art?

Umm Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kirsten Dunst either of the Olsen Twins, (laughs)

When did you first start?
Well, young!! I remember tracing and tracing over my He-Man comics until I could draw them without the tracing, so as everyone, good at art or not we all started when we were really young, we all drew before we could write.

What is the most expensive art related purchase you have made?

Digital camcorder called Stanley

Are there other artists in your family?
No, not at the moment but my little sis is way more talented at 16 than I was, so I could see her being a great artist.

If you could pick just three colours to work with what would they be?
Red - The colour of Manchester United a fine bunch of lads.
Black - Imagine a green Darth Vader
White - Plain and perfect

What item could you not do without?
My glasses

If money were no object which artwork would you buy?

The master to any Kubrick films, or the Beatles catalogue

Which artist, past or present, would you like to study under or collaborate with
I think it would have to be past Chris Marker and now Jeremy Dellar

What is the best tip you can offer budding artists?
Watch a lot of TV and films and go to Gallery's there is more to art than Monet, Dali and all those artist you see in Athena. Learn about today as well as yesterday. You cannot know where something is going if you don't know where it's been.

Which piece of art has provoked the strongest reaction in you and why?
The first time I saw Todd Mcfarlanes work on Spider-man, what an artist!!

Do you display your own art at home?
God no the last thing I wanna see on my walls is my own work, I'm a narcissist but not that bad.

How would you define Art?
A for Alpha R for Romeo T for Tango
