of Stephen Quick.
Stephen Richard
Quick (BA) has been a commercial artist for 10 years and exhibits
across the South West of the UK. His work for the last four
years has been primarily as a filmmaker, so these current paintings
reflect an obsession with films, comics and directors |
On
My Films
"Many
of the skills I use as a painter, I use in film, however, film,
for me, is less about thinking and more about feeling. Film
has one major advantage to me over other mediums: you can construct
a strong narrative, that can be immediate and clear to the audience,
be it a story or a concept. I have always viewed my films as
a writer's film, concepts and structure come from words, even
if they don't exist in the final cut: everything starts off
as a story" |
On
My Paintings
"We
live in a world where everything including our dreams are dictated
by the media and the celebrities. With my pop art I embrace
the materialistic nature of our heroes and icons, who we idolize
and sometimes even define who we are." |

| POP
ART |
| What is pop art?
As Andy Warhol said "Its about liking things".Pop
art is a style which seeks its inspiration from commercial art
and items of mass culture (such as films, comic strips or popular
foods). These paintings either define us as a person, or define
a place or feeling. On Splintered Studios you can find a massive
selection on Pop Art paintings that take inspiration from today's
culture. Film - paintings of Star Wars, James Dean, Audrey Hepburn,
Lord Of The Rings, Pulp Fiction and many more along with director
painting of Hitchcock, Kubrick, Jackson and Burton. TV - paintings
of classic shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, My So Called Life
and Lost. Music - paintings of some of my music heroes, Jeff Buckley,
Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Hope Sandoval, Bon Jovi and many many
more. In addition to these famous people and images Stephen Quick
has a collection of pop art based on Comic books, especially Marvel,
paintings include Wolverine, The X-Men, Spider-Man, Catwoman,
Black Cat, The Phoenix and Ghost Rider. |
| ABSTRACT
& SEMI-ABSTRACT |
| Curtis Verdum
said "Abstract art isn't simply
a lack of realism. It's rather a heightened depiction of what
an object really is."Abstract
is a style of painting in which non-representational lines, colours,
shapes and forms replace accurate visual depictions of objects,
landscapes and figures. The subject is often stylised, blurred,
repeated or broken down into basic forms so that it becomes unrecognizable.
Intangible subjects such as thoughts, emotions and time are often
expressed in abstract form. Stephen Quick has a small number
of abstract painting for sale, based on the anger of colours and
colour theory,a long with some abstract pop art hybrid painting
based on film and music icons. |
| NUDES |
| Chazal said "The
beautiful remains so in ugly surroundings". Or how Jean Kerr
puts it "I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being
only skin-deep. That's deep enough. What do you want—an
adorable pancreas?” To me there is nothing more beautiful
than the human form, and my paintings are a voyeuristic look into
the beauty and the fragility of this. There is a wide selection
of nudes and voyeuristic paintings in the gallery. |
| BANANANA
MANIFESTO |
| The "Banana
Manifesto" is basically an art gag; a post modern take on
post modern ideals. I take overused cultural images, mainly what
I call "Athena Art", and given these images a new lease
of life. The images chosen are ones that are so overused that
we no longer look at them, we know what they are, very much in
the same way we do not need to read a coke can or a McDonalds
sign to know what it is. By adding a Warhol banana, these images
takes on new meanings and make the viewer re-evaluate the subjects
in question. The Bananas
in some cases work as a social commentary (guns replaced by bananas)
or make a comment on the person or character in the painting (the
banana acting as an innuendo for Audrey Hepburn), they can also
act to reveal new contextual meanings, all hoping to bring a giggle
or a smile from the viewer. |
