THE ART OF STEPHEN

THE LEARNING SERIES
2004

Mozart, Lennon, van Gogh, do we need pain to be creative? Does an artist need to have experienced hard times in their life to be inspirational, or is it just an elitist view with society liking the idea of the artist who has fought and struggled to produce his / her art. The learning series consists of four short films. They are the most "arty"films I have produced and ask, do we need pain to make art, be it painting or writing etc? These films take the linear line of this idea and reverse it. The need for pain to be creative is satirised as the pain is being created on purpose to produce the work, it is pain for pains sake. A montage of sound that gets into your head and creates an uncomfortable sound track, in turn causing an audio pain to the viewer. The name of the series of the films reflects what I learned while doing these films; the more you experience the bad things in life the more you learn how to deal with them, a pain is never the same the second time as previous experience helps you deal with it.
