THE ART OF STEPHEN QUICK
STEVIE (2004)

A semi-biographical tale of a young boy negotiating life with issues of self-esteem and self-concept. Stevie narrates his conflicts with his parents, friends and ultimately his face, to the audience; he constructs the film. He blames everything that goes wrong in his life on his face and his unfortunate attitude towards it. Through his struggle he tells of the day he fell in love and for the first time felt normal, only to be humiliated by the girl when she sets him up and yells in his face "Ha, ha, ha, you're so ugly, you look like a crippled leper." This episode drives him into himself; and yet he finds solace in writing his story and telling it to the audience.
